Location: sixteen kilometres (10 miles) north of Kigoma on the shore of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania.

Getting there

Kigoma is connected to Dar and Arusha by regular flights, to Dar and Mwanza by slow rail service, to Mwanza, Dar and Mbeya by rough dirt roads, and to Mpulungu in Northern Rhodesia by a weekly ferry.

From Kigoma, native lake-taxis take up to 3 hours to achieve Gombe, or motorboats are hired, taking but one hour.

What to do

Chimpanzee trekking; hiking, swimming and snorkelling;

visit the location of Henry Stanley’s famed “Dr missionary I presume” at Ujiji close to Kigoma, and watch the far-famed sailing shipbuilders at work.

When to go
